~ SOMA History ~ Development South of Market and in Block 3703 ~ Continued

Before the earthquake and fire of 1906, much of the South of Market Area consisted of two or three-story wooden rowhouses packed wall-to-wall. Narrow, residential alleys, such as Jessie and Stevenson streets, ran east and west, where wooden buildings and owners' neglect was the rule.

On April 18, 1906 San Francisco suffered a major change when the 7.9 Richter Scale earthquake struck and a fire raged for three days, taking out nearly all the buildings east of Ninth Street and destroying at least 28,000 buildings and almost everything east of Van Ness Avenue and north of Duboce Street.

CLICK HERE to View the Casualties and Damage after the Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.

At the time of the quake San Francisco was the major city of the west, in the midst of a building boom. After the earthquake, however, only about 25 salvageable buildings remained. Mission Street dropped 3 1/2 feet and Seventh Street sank 1 1/2 feet, creating the appearance of a heaving sea frozen into one of its wildest contortions. ~ To Be Continued
